OUR STORY!
From boring evenings on a holiday trip to creating our own card game with the help of our cats.
Hi! We are Lisa and Emiel, the creators of Whisker Academy.
During a holiday trip we had some very boring evenings with nothing to do. So we started playing card games to keep ourselves entertained. We ended up having so much fun that we thought: why not make our own game? We are both artists in the game industry, but we have always loved physical games also. So we mixed our love for cute cats, silly moments, and fun strategy. And that is how Whisker Academy began.
And of course, our cats were always nearby, watching, judging, and inspiring every step.
This is the short story of how Whisker Academy came to life!
Initial Concept
We first decided to make our own card game while playing other card games.
One night while playing Uno, something just sparked. We started to imagine what our own game could look like and what would make it fun.
It took a while to find the idea that felt right. We wanted something that fit our personality and something we would enjoy playing ourselves.
After many brainstorm sessions and a wall full of sticky notes, we finally had it.
Cats! We love cats and have 2 at home, so it was an easy choice.
And Careers! We are both in the middle of building our careers, so it felt funny and relatable. And who knows, maybe this game itself will become our career one day.
Rules & Design
Once we had the concept, it was time to create the rules, characters, and cards. Luckily, with our background as professional artists, we were able to shape a clear and detailed project plan.
But a game is more than just rules! We needed to test it and start designing how everything would look.
This part took quite some time and went through many iterations. (check our blog for more detail)
After a lot of work, we finally found a style and design that felt just right.
We also added something personal. Some of our characters are based on our own cats, both the ones we have now and the ones we loved in the past. We lost two of them to old age, so adding them into the game felt like a special way to remember them.
Now that the designs are complete, it is time to share this card game with the world!
Playtesting & Marketing
Now came another exciting part. Testing our game with others to see if they enjoy it, if the balance feels right, and where we can improve.
We were lucky that our family and friends were happy to help us playtest. And we hope that soon you will get to experience the joy of this game as well.
After that, it was time to share Whisker Academy with the world. This part was a bit challenging, since we are not marketing experts. But we are doing our best by building a small community online, creating fun videos, and sharing our journey.
